United Studio Technologies presents a classic reborn: The UT FET47, inspired by the Original Neumann U47 FET, is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone with solid-state electronics, using a FET (Field-Effect Transistor) and employing a specially terminated Cinemag transformer, as well as an HZ-series capsule designed by Eric Heiserman. The HZ-series capsules are still being manufactured, but only a few at a time; they are rigorously tested by ear and only used if they meet United’s and Eric’s expectations.
The advantage of this microphone is its cardioid polar pattern, which picks up sound primarily from the front while rejecting side noise, and a switchable high-pass filter at ~75 Hz, useful for reducing low-frequency noise. It also includes a −10 dB pad to handle loud sources without distortion.
With over 50 years of combined industry experience, United has dedicated years to the research and development of this microphone.
