FAQ: Active or Passive DI – What’s the Difference?

Active DI (e.g., Heritage 73 DI): These feature active electronic circuitry to adapt the impedance. They require phantom power, offer better high-frequency response, greater transparency, and capture weak signals more effectively. They are ideal for passive instruments such as guitars and passive basses.

Passive DI (e.g., Heritage P DI): These use an internal transformer to adapt the impedance and balance the signal. They provide excellent electrical isolation to prevent noise or ground loops, deliver a warm and natural tone, do not require phantom power, handle strong signals without distortion, and are ideal for active instruments such as active basses, keyboards, and synthesizers.
